The Village Garden Mural
I spent over a decade of my early adult life (right after grad school) teaching art at a beautiful K-8 private school in Augusta, Georgia. Part of the school was nicknamed "The Village" and this is where the youngest students (ages 3-5) went to learn and explore. This part of the school included plenty of outdoor space, including an interactive garden where children planted seeds and watched them grow.
I was approached about painting a mural in The Village Garden the summer before my final year teaching there. At the time, my oldest two children were students in "The Village," so our connections to this school and community felt both deeply rooted and freshly blooming. I centered the theme of this mural around the concept of connectedness. Connectedness with the earth, the sky, and the changing seasons...as well as shining a spotlight on the magical moments unfolding on smaller scales all around us.
